(CNN) - Slow and steady can win the race. But it can also help you lose weight.

To achieve your weight loss goals, be consistent. Slowly shedding pounds can be better long term than a drastic drop in weight early on.

That's according to a new study published in the journal Obesity.

Researchers put 183 overweight or obese people on a weight loss program for a year. Every week, weight was tracked and analyzed.

Researchers found that people who quickly lost weight in the beginning of the program struggled keeping the weight off.

But those people who slowly lost weight and who made sustainable changes to their lifestyle were able to keep the pounds off after a year.

If you want to lose weight, keep a stable schedule for eating.

Plan ahead and prep food for the week. Try not to eat out too much. That way you won't be tempted to make impulse decisions. And make time to exercise.

Even small, consistent changes can make a big difference.
