(CNN) - A Wisconsin sheriff who campaigned for President Donald Trump apparently plagiarized parts of his master's thesis, CNN says.
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke wrote the thesis on security and privacy rights four years ago.
But a CNN KFile review found that he failed to properly attribute his sources at least 47-times.
He did credit them with a footnote but did not indicate with quotation marks that he took the words verbatim.
That goes against plagiarism guidelines at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where he earned his degree in security studies.
After CNN contacted Clarke, he took to Twitter to suggest the network is unfair.
Clarke has raised eyebrows for controversial comments, including calling the Black Lives Matter movement a hate group.
He said this week that he would be appointed an assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
But the department says it did not make any announcement about his appointment.
