(RNN) - Sexual interest is low among older American husbands living in disorderly households.
So found a newly published study of married and cohabiting men aged 62 to 90 that involved 955 heterosexual couples.
The researchers did not know exactly why household disorder predicts lower sexual interest among the older men. But co-author James Iveniuk of the University of Toronto offered a suggestion.
"An unkempt home may be a stressor that reduced interest in sex, as well as signaling the inappropriateness of one's home as a place for sexual activity," he said in a news release.
Overall, slightly more than 25 percent of the men indicated they lacked sexual interest in the past year, according to "The Gerontologist."
That number was about 40 percent for the men who lived in disorderly homes. Researchers said disorderly homes could be described in one or more of these ways: untidy, noisy, dirty or poorly repaired.
Regular sexual expression is important for it "can improve psychological and physical well-being in later life," said the lead author, Markus Schafer, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Toronto.
