LYLE, MN (KIMT/CNN) - The Mower County Sheriff's Office is investigating a semi-truck that crashed into a school Tuesday, while class was in session.
Two people inside another car and two students were injured. The district superintendent says if the semi would not have hit a load-bearing wall, several more students could have been hurt or even killed.
"I was driving actually to work and I saw a semi hit a car and then it went right into the school and hit the school," said Mark Lonergan, a good Samaritan who stopped to help.
The Minnesota State Patrol say the car was getting ready to turn, and the semi behind it struggled to slow down. That's when the semi slammed into the rear of the car, veering off Highway 218 and into a classroom.
"There was diesel fuel spraying everywhere, kids screaming; semi driver was beating on the door trying to get out," Lonergan said.
The school treated it like a fire alarm, evacuating the kids immediately and sending a text and email to parents to come pick up their children due to an emergency.
