ROY, UT (KSL/CNN) – A man in Utah is charged with aggravated murder after he allegedly punched a 1-month-old baby repeatedly in a fit of anger.
Matthew Graves, 22, was charged Friday after court documents say police received a call about an unresponsive infant at an apartment complex.
According to charging documents, Graves said the infant’s crying upset him, so he repeatedly punched him in the head after he “blacked out from rage.”
The documents also say Graves couldn’t recall how many times he punched the baby. Police say the suspect described himself as a “monster.”
The infant suffered “significant brain trauma” leading up to his death, according to charging documents.
The suspect’s neighbor described the scene when investigators first arrived.
“We saw the CSI loading up a big old truck, a crib and everything, so we're like, 'Oh, something happened to the baby,’” neighbor Greg Montano said.
The baby’s 5-year-old brother was interviewed by police, telling them about “instances of domestic violence in the home,” according to documents.
Police also reported finding drugs in Graves’ car and home.
Graves’ aggravated murder charge is classified as a first-degree felony.
