BUSKIRK, NY (WTEN/CNN) - Ollie, a gentle beef cow who was born blind and mostly deaf often loses his way in the pasture.
That’s when he calls for help.
And when he does, it’s his best friend Sunny who never fails to make her way to him.
It’s been like this every day for nearly a decade.
Their unique story began when Ollie was born.
His own mother rejected him and as luck would have it, a kind Jersey cow named Ms. Clover took him under her wing or her hoof, so to speak.
Wherever Ms. Clover went, Ollie followed.
Soon Ms. Clover had her own calf named Sunny who also took on the job of being Ollie’s guide.
But all good things must come to an end.
Ms. Clover was called up to that great pasture in the sky.
The farm was the sold, and a desperate message went out to find the two calves a new home together.
That an answer came from Rensselaer County, NY.
Tracy Muscatello who owns and operates Hearts Herd Animal Sanctuary in Buskirk, NY, said she could not say no.
The farm is a sanctuary for all kinds of abandoned feathered, and four legged animals.
This cast of characters became adoptive family members for Ollie and Sunny the day they arrived on a trailer this past summer.
It was then Muscatello saw something she’d never seen before between animals.
“He always has to know where Sunny is,” she said. “And Sunny’s not more that 50 yards away from him, however, if she wants attention and she wanders away, all of a sudden he’s very present that she’s not around and he calls for her.”
And when he calls, Sunny will without fail make her way to Ollie’s side. It’s much the same way at the close of the day when Sunny leads Ollie into the barn.
“She never fails him,” Muscatello said. “She truly is his seeing eye cow.”
Eight months into their stay, Muscatello said she realizes what Ollie’s fate might have been had she not said yes to taking them in.
“He would have been at an auction,” she said. “He would have been scared out of his mind. And then he would have been somebody’s hamburger.”
To ensure Ollie never becomes someone’s hamburger dinner, Tracy said he and Sunny are now welcomed to live their days at Hearts Herd.
