(CNN) - Russia has canceled a meeting between senior U.S. and Russian officials aimed at resolving problems in the relationship between the two countries.
The decision came in response to the U.S. tightening Russian sanctions on Tuesday in a bid to force the end of its occupation of Crimea.
The meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and U.S. Under Secretary of State Tom Shannon was due to take place in St. Petersburg.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Washington's desire to seek common ground with Russia sounds unconvincing.
It also warned there will be a response, including "practical retaliatory measures."
A State Department spokeswoman said the U.S. regretted Russia's decision to cancel the talks, and added the package of sanctions issued Tuesday only reinforced those already in place.
