Rocks thrown at interstate commuters at rush hour

Posted

ATLANTA, GA (WSB/CNN) - Jane Yi heard a large rock smashing through her rear windshield as she pulled off Interstate 85.

“I honestly thought I was being shot at because it was so loud,” Yi said.

She pulled over and quickly saw other cars that were hit by large rocks.

“I’m just grateful I didn’t get hit in the front, because if my front windshield shattered like my back, I would probably be blind. I could have swayed and hit another car and killed myself or someone else,” Yi said.

Janice Durant’s car was also hit.

“It was probably baseball to softball-sized paving stones, and it had been thrown from the cliff above,” Durant said. She said witnesses saw some teens throwing rocks from the cliff that hugs the hugs the exit ramp. Durant took photos of the damage to her new car: A rock came through a passenger window. She said fortunately her 9-year-old daughter had been crouched down in the seat because she was not feeling well.

“Her words to me were, ‘God was protecting me that night because thank goodness I was bent down,’” Durant said of her daughter.

Police are investigating. There were reports that someone also threw rocks from the cliff at several cars midday Sunday. That leaves commuters like Yi frightened for their safety.

“I’m super concerned, and I don’t take that exit anymore,” she said.
