(RNN) – A new online video features an event that’s both heartwarming and bone-chilling: a considerate robot opening the door for its fellow machine.
The video, uploaded by robotics manufacturer Boston Dynamics to its YouTube channel, showcases a four-legged, doglike robot – which the company has named the “SpotMini,” according to The Verge.
The SpotMini trots through a laboratory to a closed door. It briefly pauses to scan the obstacle. It then turns to hail a nearby “friend” for help.
The friend almost perfectly resembles the first robot, except for one crucial difference: a long dexterous arm mounted on top.
The second robot reaches the door. It methodically extends the arm and clutches the handle. It twists and pulls, and the door opens.
But the robot doesn’t walk through, at least not right away. It minds its manners and holds the door just long enough for its colleague to slip past.
Only then does the second robot slink through, carefully swiveling its long arm to ensure the door doesn’t knock it on the way out.
