(RNN) - Rawhide dog chew products that made some pets ill are being recalled.

Tainted with a cleaning compound, the products have an unpleasant odor, United Pet Group says.

The recalled products are American Beefhide, Digest-eeze, Good 'n' Fit, Good 'n' Fun and Healthy Hide. They were sold nationwide at retail stores and online.

Some dogs have had diarrhea and vomiting, the company said in a news release on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration site. Other symptoms include reduced appetite and gastric irritation and, if severe enough, may require dogs to be treated by veterinarians.

The company says quaternary ammonium compound mixture, which was used in manufacturing the product, is approved for cleaning food processing equipment but not for making rawhide chews. The rawhide came from Mexico, Colombia and Brazil.

All products in the recall have an expiration date ranging from 06/01/2019 through 05/31/2020 on the back of the packages. The recalled products are of all package sizes and weights and have lot codes that start with AH, AV, A, AI, AO or AB.

Customers can get refunds by returning the products to the places of purchase or by phoning the United Pet Group consumer affairs team at 1-855-215-4962 between the hours of 8:00 am - 11:00 pm EST.
