GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WOOD/CNN) - A solemn ceremony took place in Michigan on Friday. Friday would have been the 104th birthday of former President Gerald Ford. Ford was the nation's 38th president.
He took office after President Richard Nixon resigned, but lost his bid to serve a full term to Democrat Jimmy Carter.
There was a wreath laying at his grave site outside the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids. On Thursday, there was a lecture from former Ambassador Carla A. Hills, who served in Ford's cabinet.
"We decided to try and incorporate the (William) Simon Lecture, not every year but most years, we've been able to incorporate that and have someone come in as spectacular as Carla, to bring people to the museum to understand what the wreath laying is about,” said Susan Ford Bales, President Ford's daughter.
Gerald R. Ford died in 2006, at the age of 93. His wife, Betty, died in 2011. She is buried next to her husband.
