SOUTH PORTLAND, ME (WMTW/CNN) - There's been a tense standoff in Maine over a tree set to be chopped down. A woman climbed up on the tree in South Portland on Tuesday, just as construction crews were on their way.
The tree is on a private lot whose owner wants to build. But Jamie Howard says the tree has a special meaning to the neighborhood and it shouldn't be cut down.
She also says some kids nicknamed the tree "Groot," after a character from the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie.
"I always said that I would, I said I would chain myself to it, but I had a ladder faster," Howard said on Tuesday. Howard wants the lot to be turned into a park or a community area.
