FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (WSVN/CNN) - A man in Florida is recovering after severely injuring one of his hands with holiday fireworks. Officials say it happened after fireworks went off outside his home in Fort Lauderdale on Monday afternoon.
The victim was later transported to a trauma facility. One of his neighbors says he heard the explosion, followed by the victim's screams.
The neighbor then went to see what happened, and was horrified. "I go over there, I see the blood trail, I see a piece of ligament on the sidewalk, it is grotesque, you know, it is harsh! His hand, his thumb is split open from here to here and it is back, but there is no meat, no bones, no anything on the inside,” the neighbor said.
He went on to describe how bad the injuries looked. “These two fingers are split open as well, but they are dropped, so it is just like piece of meat just dangling from a butcher,” the neighbor said.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 11,000 people were injured by fireworks last year. Four of them died from their injuries.
