TAL AFAR, IRAQ (Radio Free Europe/CNN) – Gunshots and explosions are heard during street-by-street fighting in Tal Afar, in western Iraq, over the weekend. Iraqi allied forces are trying to regain total control of the town located west of Mosul.

A military commander says only the northwestern outskirts remain an ISIS stronghold.  Iraqi forces say they have recaptured all the districts in the urban center of Tal Afar from ISIS.

According to Tal Afar Operation Commander Abdulmanir Yarallah, only one area in the northwestern outskirts of the province remains under ISIS control.

Iraqi Joint Military Command spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool told CNN the 15th and 16th divisions of the military are currently advancing toward the ISIS-occupied al-Aidiya province and the surrounding villages.
