PANA, IL (WCIA/CNN) - Five senior citizens died after their car was crushed by a train in Illinois. It happened on Wednesday evening at a railway crossing in Pana, about 200 miles south of Chicago.
The driver failed to yield to the incoming train, before it rammed into the vehicle. Three victims were killed at the scene, while two others died in the hospital.
Two of the victims were grandparents of a deputy who responded to the incident, which affected the entire sheriff's office. "We're all family here at the sheriff's office, so we're all hurting today. We feel for our brother, and it's just a very sad day for the whole county to lose five people in one tragic event," said Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelcamp.
The victims were between 77 and 89 years of age.
