Rare, stinky flower poised to blossom

Posted

(CNN/RNN) - Whether you are going on a date or headed to a dinner party, it's always nice to bring flowers.

But not this one - they don't call it a corpse flower for nothing.

It's about to bloom in the Des Moines, IA, Botanical Gardens, where it will fill the air with a smell like rotting flesh. People find the odor repulsive, but flies and other creepy creatures that feed on carrion are drawn to it like ... flies.

These scavenger insects pollinate the plant, which looks a lot like the ravenous, man-eating plant in the classic film "Little House of Horrors."

But don't worry, it won't eat you. The blossom, which is fairly hideous itself, only lasts about 24 hours. After that, it won't appear again for three to five years.
