Puppy beaten, dragged; owner arrested

EVERETT, MA (WCVB/CNN) - A puppy, crying in pain, was being dragged down a driveway when neighbors called police to get the dog some help.

The dog suffered multiple fractures and bruises, and its lungs were filled with fluid. There was also evidence the dog had been strangled.

"It's just a sad situation," the neighbor who called police said. "It's terrible. I don't understand it. I can't fathom someone could do that to an animal."

She asked the dog's owner about what was happening and he said the dog was OK.

"He was dragging the dog through the back yard," she said. "Bleeding and coughing up blood."

Police arrested Mark Hurd, 22, and charged him with animal cruelty.

Another neighbor said the dog had been abused previously.

"A couple of nights ago he was out there with a stick," the man said. "He was hitting the dog with a stick. I wish I would have done something, but he told us to mind our own business."

It's not clear what prompted the vicious attack on the animal. Neighbors say the dog has always been friendly.

"Beautiful dog, young dog, not much more than a puppy," a neighbor said. "Tail always working and he would cry in the yard for attention."

Caretakers have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for the mounting medical costs associated with the dog's treatment.

The dog has been named Chance.
