Prosecutors: Man killed 12-year-old girl to punish mother

CHICAGO (WLS/CNN) - Prosecutors revealed disturbing new details in the killing of 12-year-old Alexis Stubbs, allegedly by her stepfather.

Her last pleas were heard on voicemail.

Alexis' mother and the accused killer, 31-year-old convicted felon John Singleton, were arguing over the phone when the girl's cries were captured, Assistant State's Attorney Guy Lisuzzo said.

"The victim was screaming and begging for her life, saying, 'Please daddy, don't,'" he said.

Singleton called the girl's mother multiple times in the minutes before stabbing and beating the girl to death inside her apartment Sunday night, Lisuzzo said.

"It's just tearing her apart," said Andrew Holmes, a crisis responder. "She's been looking forward to graduation in the years to come and things they wanted to do. They had a bond, and that bond has been broken."

Singleton is said to have killed Alexis in a rage after her mother told him he had to vacate her Northside apartment. He'd been staying there since being released from a halfway house a few days earlier on parole after spending three years in custody for attempting to strangle her in 2014.

Initially escaping police following the murder, prosecutors say he sent the girl's mother a series of taunting text messages.

"The defendant stated among other things, "See what you made me do for not appreciat(ing) me like you should have done in the first place," Lisuzzo said.

Following his arrest, Singleton attacked one of the detectives who had been questioning him and is now charged with aggravated battery of a police officer in addition to kidnapping and murder.
