FORT MYERS, FL (WBBH/CNN) – A mother of two and her newborn baby are recovering after the woman was struck by lightning near the end of her pregnancy.

Nine months pregnant Meghan Davidson and her mother were walking near Davidson’s home Thursday when Davidson was hit in the head by lightning.

The 26-year-old mother was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

At the hospital, doctors rushed to deliver her baby in hopes of avoiding further complications. The baby, named Owen, was seven days from his due date.

Hospital officials would not release Owen’s condition, but family friends say he is being monitored closely.

Davidson remained in intensive care as of Monday, but a member of the woman’s church says she has shown signs of improvement, according to the Associated Press.

Friends have asked for prayers as the two recover.
