(CNN) - Fifteen years since the U.S. invasion of Iraq and American attitudes about the war are nearly evenly split.

According to a new Pew Research poll, 48 percent said the U.S. made the wrong decision in using military force in Iraq while 43 percent said it was the right decision.

More than half of Americans believe the U.S. mostly failed to accomplish its goals in Iraq. Only 39 percent said they thought it had mostly succeeded.

Along partisan lines, 61 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say the U.S. was right to use military force in Iraq.

That's compared to only 27-percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents

The poll was conducted from March 7 to 14.
