WINDSOR LOCKS, CT (WTIC/CNN) - A group of Connecticut police hammered away to turn a house back into a home.
This all started in July when officer Jeff Lampson was responding to a call - helping a child find his sister.
When he reunited the siblings, he brought them home.
He was shocked to learn that their mother was battling cancer and couldn't work or take care of the home.
“it kind of resonated with me and that's what kind of put things into movement,” Lampson said.
The first task was getting social services out to the house with a building inspector, but it was so bad that they tried to get government aid.
“We ran into some road blocks with HUD and it was actually a very disappointing process as they seemed disinterested and apathetic to wanting to help out,” Lampson said.
The police officers then took matters into their own hands.
In the meantime, the family was forced to live in a motel for months.
“You have a family of four living in a two-room motel with a three-foot-tall refrigerator and a small microwave. How are you raising your family,” Sgt. Sebastian Garofalo said.
Their mission is to get this family home by working beyond the badge, to make her holiday wish come true.
“It’s what we signed up to do, and It's not all about arresting the bad guy, but finding issues like this that are in your community, pooling together the resources and helping out,” Lampson said.
