OKMULGEE, OK (KJRH/CNN) – A 5-year-old in Oklahoma received bruises and whelps on his face and body when his mother’s boyfriend allegedly hit him after the boy opened one of his Christmas presents.
Wesley McCollum, 25, was arrested Saturday on complaints of child abuse and child neglect.
The 5-year-old’s mother says her boyfriend was watching her children while she was Christmas shopping earlier in the day.
When she came home, she saw bruises on her son’s back and arms, whelps on his forehead and an apparent handprint on his cheek.
"Words cannot explain seeing your baby like this and having no clue what happened. I ran to him like any mother would do crying, hugging him, begging what happened. "Wesley hurt me bad mama," is all he kept saying,” wrote the mother in a Facebook post.
The woman says McCollum told her he was trying to teach the boy a lesson after he says the 5-year-old took a present from under the Christmas tree and opened it.
The child was taken to the hospital.
The boy’s mother says she filed a protective order against McCollum Monday morning.
