(CNN) – It's a mystery that is baffling some of the smartest people on the planet.
A picture was taken in the Beaufort Sea by the Arctic Ocean shows there are three-spots - holes in the ice - in the middle of the shot.
Scientists say they are areas of thin ice, but it's an oddity that these researchers have never seen before.
The picture taken by NASA’s Operation Icebridge was included in NASA’s "Puzzler" series this month.
Among the theories, these holes could be warm paths of water beneath the ice or caused by a marine mammal trying to breathe.
