(CNN) - Regular doctor visits are important to maintaining good health. And the same goes for our pets.

Health screenings and vaccinations can help prevent some life threatening illnesses like Bordetella, better known as kennel cough, which is a respiratory disease that can affect both cats and dogs.

Reports also show that an estimated 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of dental disease by age three, which can lead to loose teeth or even chronic pain.

Getting your pet spayed or neutered can also lower the risk of certain cancers.

Maintain a healthy weight. Feeding your dog table scraps may seem harmless but overfeeding your pet can actually pose a serious threat. Having an overweight cat or dog comes with health risks like diabetes, arthritis, and even cancer.

Another good reason to visit your vet is to find out exactly how many calories your pet needs on a daily basis to maintain a healthy weight and live longer.

Provide an enriched environment. Diet and exercise go hand in hand and it's a great way to keep your pets healthy. Taking Fido on daily walks or play time at the dog park will help keep their weight in check and keep them entertained.
