(RNN) - Peter Sallis, best known for being the voice of Wallace in the animated films featuring Wallace and Gromit, has died at the age of 96.

He was famous in his native Britain for his role in “Last of the Summer Wine,” the longest-running sitcom in that nation’s history. The series ran from 1973 until 2010, and Sallis is the only actor who appeared in all 295 episodes. He played Norman “Cleggy” Clegg.

His role as the madcap inventor Wallace made his voice known worldwide, and he said it was “heartwarming” to be involved in such a successful project at his age.

The Wallace and Gromit films “The Wrong Trousers” (1993) and “A Close Shave” (1995) both won Oscars. He won individual awards for the 2005 “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit,” which also won an Academy Award.
