(CNN) - One of the grouchiest residents of Sesame Street is celebrating his birthday.
June 1 is 48-year-old Oscar the Grouch's birthday.
Jim Henson created Oscar for the show in 1969 and he became a popular character.
Oscar has always been grouchy. His first words on Sesame Street were "Don't bang on my can! Go away."
But he has not always been green.
Oscar was purple when Henson first created him and orange in season one.
His voice was created by puppeteer Carroll Spinney, who played another beloved muppet, Big Bird.
