PORTLAND (KATU/CNN) – An Oregon hotel is apologizing to a man after it had him escorted off the property even though he was a guest there.
The man said that's not good enough and is filing a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination.
The general manager of the Double-Tree Hotel in northeast Portland said the incident that was caught on video was "was unacceptable and contrary to our values, beliefs and how we seek to treat all people who visit our hotel."
"We are seeking the counsel of community leaders, and will engage a third-party to conduct a full investigation into the incident," said the manager.
Jermaine Massey posted videos on Instagram showing a security guard at the hotel ordering him to leave.
Massey was a paid guest at the hotel at the time and says he was in the lobby late Saturday night talking on the phone with his mom.
The hotel called police saying Massey refused to show them his room key or proof he was staying there.
"We anticipate filing a lawsuit against Hilton DoubleTree and requiring them to answer the question they've so far refused to answer. Which is, why was this guy approached in a hotel lobby when he's doing nothing more than talking to his mother on the phone? Why was he interrogated? Why was he ordered to leave on pain of going to jail?" said Greg Kafoury, Massey's attorney.
Officers escorted Massey off the property and no one was arrested.
According to the hotel's manager, the employees involved in the incident are on leave while the investigation continues.
