(CNN) - A high school outside Washington, DC, says it will not support or encourage racial division after signs saying, "It's okay to be white" were posted at the school.
Montgomery Blair's principal believes the posted could be part of a national campaign to create racial tension.
News reports indicate the signs have appeared elsewhere, including Tulane University in New Orleans.
An image of a hooded person was captured, and school officials believe that is who is behind the poster.
"Really? Those type of posters? In a school as diverse as Blair?" student Antoinette Ntomb said.
School stats show 15 percent of the students are Asian, 24 percent are black and 33 percent are Hispanic.
The school's principal sent parents a letter that said, in part, "we will not fall victim to attempts to divide us. We are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for every student."
Students said they are confident racial division will not affect the school.
"Well, it's OK to be black too," Ntomb said. "It's OK to be Asian and bi-racial and tri-racial and poly-racial and everything else."
It's unclear if the person who posted the signs is a student at the school.
