A stand-up paddle boarder is still fighting for his life after a shark attack in Kona waters Saturday morning.
On Sunday, a day after the incident, West Hawaii Fire officials provided new insight into what happened.
The victim was reportedly alongside his dad when the approximately 12-foot-long tiger shark knocked both father and son off their boards and into the water around 9:30 a.m.
"The incident happened right outside of the Kukio lifeguard stand and they heard someone yelling for help," John Whiteman, West Hawaii Batt. Chief said.
"They launched a canoe to some paddle boarders approximately 150-200 yards off shore. When they got on scene, they found a shark attack victim in the water and another male on a paddle board," Whiteman added.
Ocean safety crews also launched a jet ski to distract the shark which was circling the area.
Good Samaritans, including an off-duty firefighter, sprung into action to apply tourniquets and save the man's life.
The victim is a man in his mid-20s. Both father and son are Big Island residents.
"The information that we are receiving is that he was brought to shore immediately and was helecoptered over to the hospital and is receiving medical attention there," Morgan Suzuki, director of public relations and communications for the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai said.
The man was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital Emergency Room and was later flown to Queen's on Oahu.
Officials say he is missing part of his leg and suffered injuries to one arm.
The father was not injured in the incident.
Kukio Beach and nearby areas reopened Sunday after an aerial flyover by HFD.
An 8-foot tiger shark was spotted in waters near Kawaihae, but was not reported to be aggressive. As a precaution, swimmers and surfers were told to clear the water.
