POHATCONG TOWNSHIP, NJ (WFMZ/CNN) - Authorities say a man made a grisly discovery on the bank of the Delaware River Sunday.
According to police, a resident found a sneaker with a human bone in it in Pohatcong Township.
Officials said the bones are confirmed to be a human foot and partial ankle inside a woman's white Reebok sneaker.
Police say the remains are completely decomposed and only skeletal.
They say the case is highly unusual.
"You might see a deceased animal, but it's not every day you find human remains in a shoe," said Detective Sgt. Scott Robb of the Pohatcong Township Police Dept.
Officials are working to identify the bones and get answers as to what happened.
They say tests should help determine the bones' age and if they belong to a man or a woman.
