CLINTON, MO (KMBC/CNN) - Police are searching for a man they say shot and killed an officer.
Officer Gary Michael was making a traffic stop Sunday when a suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Ian McCarthy, 39, has been identified as a person of interest.
Michael was able to return fire, but it is unclear if the driver was hit.
The suspect apparently drove away and then crashed his car nearby. Authorities believed he ran away.
Several police agencies have put up checkpoints up across the area.
Michael had been with the department for less than a year. He was 37 years old.
