PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD (WJLA/CNN) - Maryland police are mourning an officer who was shot and killed Wednesday while protecting a neighbor.
Officials and police in Prince George's County said Cpl. Mujahid Ramzziddin was a hero on and off the job.
In 2006 as a relatively new officer, Ramzziddin won a medal of valor for heroism.
The head of the police union said it how the cop they called Ram has now died a hero.
"A father, a son, a husband, a peacekeeper,” said John Teletchea of the Fraternal Order of Police, Prince George's County. “(He was) not a peacekeeper in a far-off land, a peacekeeper who lives in community and serves his community."
County Executive Rushern Baker offered similar sentiments.
"This is a gentleman who lived his life giving to others, giving service," Baker said.
And that's what happened Wednesday morning.
Ramzziddin was home, off duty in his Brandywine, Chadds Ford community, when a neighbor came running for protection from her husband, Glenn Tydell, 37.
Tydell had a shotgun but the officer didn't back down.
As the woman was able to get to safety, Tydell opened fire.
Ramzziddin was killed.
"He led a consequential life, he suffered a consequential death,” said Chief Hank Stawinski of Prince George's County Police. “But he saved her life by giving his own."
Tydell managed to flee, leading officers on a pursuit all the way to Fort Washington when he was cornered by police.
Witnesses said he jumped from his car and fired at police.
Two officers shot and killed him.
Police said he had three open warrants for assault.
"There does appear to be a history of domestic incidents and they span multiple jurisdictions," Stawinski said.
Ramzziddin leaves behind a wife and four children.
