(CNN) - The New York Times says it regrets how its story about a white nationalist came across to some readers.
The story, titled "The Nazi Sympathizer Next Door," came out on Saturday. It depicted the daily life of Tony Hovater, a self-identified white nationalist in Ohio. The story did not do well online.
Several people accused The Times of normalizing white nationalism and extremism. The paper now says that people can disagree on how to tell a disagreeable story.
But it also says that there is a clear need to shed more light on the “most extreme corners of American life.”
