Navy warship collides with oil tanker

Posted

(CNN) - The remains of some of the missing sailors have been found in a compartment of the USS John S. McCain.

Admiral Scott Swift, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Tuesday morning that U.S. Navy and Marine divers found some remains in sealed compartments.

Malaysian officials also found one body that hasn't been identified, the Associated Press reported.

The USS John S. McCain, a guided missile destroyer, collided with an oil tanker east of Singapore early Monday, leaving 10 sailors missing and five sailors injured.

The collision left the ship, currently docked in Singapore, with a hole on its port side and flooded some nearby compartments housing crew, machinery and communications.

The U.S. Navy is ordering a top to bottom review of its operations, after a fourth mishap involving an American warship in the Pacific this year.

Military experts say the Navy's training is now being called into question, and a shakeup in leadership may be next.
