Navy team rescues drowning elephants in Sri Lanka

Posted

SRI LANKA (CNN) - Sri Lanka’s navy rescued two elephants that were swept out to sea.

The animals were spotted by a navy patrol more than half a mile from the shore Sunday.

They were clearly in distress, barely keeping their trunks above the surface.

The navy patrol mounted a “mammoth” rescue operation, sending in divers and multiple vessels.

The elephants were towed back to the shore and released back into the wild.

Navy officials say the animals were probably swept out while they were crossing a shallow lagoon.
