(RNN) - A sailor who had gone missing from a Navy ship last week has been found alive - on the ship.
The Navy announced Petty Officer Peter Mims, who had been missing from the guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh since June 8, was found Thursday and was transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan for medical evaluation.
Mims, 23, was reported missing and was presumed to have fallen overboard. A major search effort was orchestrated by the U.S. Navy along with the Japanese navy and coast guard in the Philippine Sea.
The ship was conducting routine operations east of Okinawa, which is an island south of Japan off the east coast of China.
The search lasted more than 50 hours and was canceled Sunday, but the ship's crew continued looking for Mims on board. In the meantime, however, Mims was presumed dead.
The Navy Times said Mims, a gas turbine technician, was found hiding in one of the ship's engine rooms.
The Washington Post reported Mims' disappearance came shortly after a search for a sailor who was seen going overboard USS Normandy, a ship in the same class as Shiloh, off the coast of North Carolina. That search was unsuccessful.
