MALDEN, MA (WCVB/CNN) - You've probably seen stories about women who give birth in the car, or on the side of the road and maybe at a fire station. But usually the new mom knows she's expecting.
But in Massachusetts on Monday, a woman gave birth on the sidewalk. The event was a shocker for everyone involved. "I've never seen nothing like it,” a neighbor said.
Neighbors could not believe their eyes. "I called the EMTs, 911,” a neighbor said.
But imagine the surprise for the parents who never saw the day coming. "She's in shock. She was like 'I didn't know I was pregnant.' I didn't know either. She's in shock,” said Doug Rogers, the father.
Rogers says his girlfriend Christine was in pain so bad that a friend was coming to take her to the hospital while Doug watched their other two kids. "She usually doesn't go crazy over pain, but she was really hurting. So I called a friend to come get her. She sat out here (and) went from here to there and the baby came,” Rogers said.
"I thought it was her daughter's doll. I looked and said no, it's a baby, it's a baby,” a neighbor said.
"She was holding something really small and there was a lot of blood,” a neighbor said. Neighbors in the building called 911, but Christine had already given birth on her own.
The only evidence now is the wet sidewalk after firefighters hosed it down. "I held her, there's some blood on me. I was like huh. She's gorgeous," the father said. Already, neighbors are offering hand-me-downs.
"Her first hat because she wanted to come on 90-degree day," a neighbor said. She came to a family that had no time to prepare for what they now consider to be a miracle.
"She's doing good. The baby's doing good. I'm just blessed right now,” Doug Rogers said. The baby girl weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
