MONTGOMERY COUNTY, IN (WLFI/CNN) – A woman in Indiana will spend the rest of her life behind bars after she pleaded guilty to stabbing her young children in their sleep.
A judge sentenced 30-year-old Brandi Worley to 120 years in prison Monday. She was charged with two counts of murder, and the judge ordered 55 years for count one and 65 for count two.
The terms are to be served consecutively.
Worley pleaded guilty to stabbing her 7-year-old son Tyler and 3-year-old daughter Charlee in 2016. She gave no statement at the sentencing, and her lawyer Mark Inman told the court there was no explanation for what she did.
However, Worley told police in multiple statements she killed the children to prevent her husband from taking them away from her in a divorce.
Inman says Worley could have received a death sentence for what she did.
"I want to applaud [the prosecuting attorney] for not applying the death penalty in this case. He could have done that, but I think for various reasons, it wasn't a death penalty case. She lived 30 years without any incident at all then something snapped. I don't know what it was, but it doesn't mean she had contemplated this for two years,” Inman said.
State prosecutors say Worley bought a sharp combat knife at Walmart the night the children were killed and told them they were going to have a sleepover on the floor.
When the children were asleep, Worley retrieved the knife then stabbed the 7-year-old four times and the 3-year-old three times.
Worley said she wanted to die with her kids, and she unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide after the murders.
Prosecutors stressed in court Worley never expressed remorse but only said she was sorry about not dying with her children.
