SANTA CLARITA, CA (RNN) – A mother of six, who was returning home from a hospital visit with her premature twin babies, was killed in a car crash in which alcohol is suspected to be a factor.
Katie Evans, 37, was driving home late Friday night when she was struck head-on by a vehicle that had lost control after sideswiping another car, the Santa Clarita Valley Signal reported.
The mother had been returning from a trip to visit her twin daughters, Hannah and Sarah, who were born premature fewer than 8 weeks earlier.
“Katie couldn't go a day without visiting her brand-new twin girls in the hospital. She was a devoted mother, sister and wife and will be immensely missed,” a family member wrote on a YouCaring fundraising page.
According to the page, the crash occurred just a mile from the Evans’ home.
Apart from her twins, Katie Evans is survived by her husband, Jacob Evans, and four children between the ages of 2 and 12 years old.
The YouCaring page, established to help Jacob Evans care for the children, surpassed its initial goal of $100,000 in just a few days.
An update posted to the page Monday says Hannah and Sarah are doing “surprisingly well” and have doubled their birth weights. Doctors expect them to go home in four to six weeks.
According to Sgt. Dan Dantice with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, alcohol containers were found in the vehicle of the 22-year-old who hit Katie Evans.
The woman was booked for misdemeanor DUI, according to the Signal. She was later released “pending further charges,” Dantice says.
