CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK/CNN) – A woman in West Virginia is facing a child neglect charge for leaving her daughter in the car while she went to family court to try and gain custody of the girl.
Detectives were walking in a parking garage next door to the police station when they noticed a car running.
When they looked inside, they discovered a baby alone in the unlocked vehicle. The little girl was inside for around 30 minutes, authorities say.
The 15-month-old’s mother Suanne Barefield was charged with felony child neglect creating risk of injury or death, according to a criminal complaint.
Detectives say Barefield was in family court, trying to gain custody of the girl while she was alone in the car.
The baby was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
