COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KXRM/CNN) – A 2-year-old in Colorado has been hospitalized and his mother arrested after police say the toddler was shot by his 3-year-old brother.
Around 1:40 p.m. Saturday, the cops were called with a report of a shooting.
"A 3-year-old finds a handgun and was playing with the handgun where it fired and hit a 2-year-old,” said Lt. Howard Black with the Colorado Springs Police.
The mother of the two boys, 30-year-old Monica Abeyta, has been arrested for felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
The 2-year-old is in serious but stable condition at the hospital. He required surgery, according to the children’s grandmother.
Police say the shooting appears to be accidental and that parents should make sure children do not have access to weapons in the house.
"I can't overstate how important it is when we have weapons, especially loaded weapons in our houses, where we have children, to ensure that we are securing those weapons in an appropriate manner,” Black said.
