LUTHER, OK (KFOR/CNN) - A distraught man and woman arrived Friday evening near the parking lot of the Apple Creek Learning Center, which was filled with flashing lights and crime tape.
Police said a 4-month-old girl’s grandmother had showed up hours earlier, around 5:30 p.m. Friday, to pick the child up.
“They informed her that she did not drop off the child, and they proceeded to look for the child inside the daycare. They couldn’t find her. That’s when they went out to the vehicle and discovered her inside the car. She was deceased," said Mark Opgrande, an Oklahoma City Sheriff's Office spokesman.
The sheriff's office was brought in to conduct the investigation into the death. It’s believed the child was inside the grandmother’s vehicle the entire day.
“The intention was to drop the child off here at the learning center, but that didn’t happen, so the only thing we could surmise is that the child was apparently in the back of the vehicle at the grandmother’s place of work for the entire day," Opgrande said.
The grandmother, who works in Oklahoma City, had full custody of the child and is talking with investigators.
“She’s being questioned. She’s obviously distraught. This is just a tragic situation," he said.
Apple Creek Learning Center’s owner posted on Facebook asking everyone to pray for the family.
“Things like this aren’t supposed to happen," Opgrande said, "but they do.”
