YOUNGSTOWN, OH (WKBN/CNN) - Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson's former Ohio mansion is being transformed into a house of worship.
The 60-acre property in rural Trumbull County is now the future home of The Living Word Sanctuary Church.
"It really got dropped on us, a 60-acre estate with a two-acre and a 1-acre lake,” said Rev. Nick DeJacimo. “All of this beautiful fencing and wrought iron, this structure of 28,000 square foot."
The room where Tyson had a pool in the shape of a boxing glove will now house the sanctuary.
And the kitchen and bedrooms will become classrooms and a reception hall.
The house was purchased at an auction and was donated to the church. It costed the church $50,000 in fees.
The renovation work and supplies were all donated too.
"You see it manicured, you see the new concrete out front, you see the portico that we added,” DeJacimo said. “All these things were done pretty much by the parishioners."
DeJacimo plans to invite Tyson to the grand opening and first service at the church.
The home sat abandoned for about 10 years.
A few Tyson elements will stay like the tiger pens in the backyard, and the two-mile long running path in the woods.
Renovations have been on-going for three years and they hope to be done by the end of summer.
