Mennonite woman jailed for refusing to testify

DENVER (KCNC/CNN) – From behind bars, Greta Lindecrantz said this is the hardest thing she’s ever done.

"I was called to help save a life and it didn't occur to me that I could be where I am now," Lindecrantz said.

She was sent to jail Monday after refusing to testify in the case of Robert Ray, who is trying to have his death penalty overturned.

Ray ordered the murders of Javon Marshall Fields and Vivian Wolfe, who were to testify in another case.

"I cannot participate in state-sanctioned murder or the taking of another person's life," Lindecrantz said.

Lindecrantz is a member of the Mennonite Church and said her religious beliefs will not allow her to testify.

But District Attorney George Brauchler, who is seeking to put Ray to death, looks at it differently.

There have been songs and prayers on behalf of Lindecrantz. She said the support is what keeps her going while she’s in jail – which could be for a long time.
