DALLAS (KTVT/CNN) - A bright summer morning was the backdrop for a somber moment on Thursday.
The familiar, mournful sound of "Taps" rang out over a crowd gathered to honor fallen officers.
A private donor unveiled the Dallas Circle of Heroes Memorial, a memorial to the four Dallas police officers and one transit officer killed in an ambush shooting a year ago.
"Today we stand here together as one community bonded together by the very loss of these good men, these heroes that we lost on July 7 of 2016," Dallas Police Deputy Chief Albert Martinez said.
Patrick Zamarripa, Lorne Ahren, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Brent Thompson all died in the attack.
Zamarripa’s daughter, 3-year-old Lyncoln, was among the family members presented with a blue and black flag at the ceremony, the Dallas-Star Telegram said.
"Dada," she responded.
The shooter, Micah Xavier Johnson, a military veteran, opened fire on the officers who were on duty at a protest.
Johnson, who he was upset about the police shootings of African American men that sparked protests nationwide, died in a standoff with police.
