(CNN) - First lady Melania Trump presented her 2017 inaugural ball gown to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on Friday.

It has been a tradition for more than a century for first ladies to donate their clothing to the museum's first ladies collection.

The collection's curator said the original donation came from Helen Taft in 1912. Upwards of 4 million visitors passed through the first ladies collection in 2016.

Trump collaborated on the gown's design with designer Herve Pierre, who was at Friday's presentation ceremony.

"I expressed desire for modern, sleek, light, unique and unexpected look," Trump said of the dress. "It can be a daunting task to choose an outfit that will mesmerized and become part of our nation's story and forever history. I was so pleased with our end result and is now my hope that this piece is one of the many great beginnings to our family's history here in Washington, DC."
