JARRETSVILLE, MD (WBAL/CNN) - A candidate for a Maryland House of Delegates seat is standing by his decision to raffle off nearly a dozen firearms, including an AR-15 rifle, at a campaign fundraiser.
But many people are upset with Aaron Penman given the event was just days after the deadly mass shooting at a Florida school. Penman said canceling the event would be an infringement against the Second Amendment.
A group held a vigil outside the campaign event for the Parkland, FL shooting victims, with many of them criticizing Penman, who says he doesn't think the rampage is about gun control.
"I don't believe this is a gun issue. I believe this is a mental health issue, this is a school security issue, and there are several things that occurred that this troubled young man fell through the cracks," Penman said.
The protestors disagree.
"This is a moment that we need to remember that actions have consequences. Just because we have the ability and the right to do something doesn't mean we have to," said Sarah Mogol, a vigil participant outside of the campaign fundraiser.
After the shooting, Penman sent a statement local media.
"i want to first convey my heartfelt sorrow for the victims and families of the Florida shooting. As (a) Christian and father of four, my thoughts and (prayers) are for the families."
The event’s Facebook page said that people who win the guns must complete a state and federal background check.
