(CNN) – Longtime U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, is set to return to the nation’s capital.
The senator's office released a statement on Wednesday saying McCain will return to the U.S. Senate next week as Congress begins a new legislative session. The statement says McCain looks forward to continuing his work for the people of Arizona and the nation.
The 81-year-old veteran, who just had a birthday on Tuesday, has been receiving treatment for brain cancer since he was diagnosed in July.
He was the GOP’s candidate for president in 2008, losing to then U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-IL.
