BERWYN, IL (WLS/CNN) – A man wielding an ax damaged more than 15 cars in Illinois before leading officers on a vehicle pursuit.
Vehicle owners in Berwyn, IL, reported a man swinging an ax at several cars Saturday morning.
When the first call came in, officers thought it was an act of road rage, but then more calls began coming in from the same neighborhood.
“This driver got out and swung an ax at another car,” one 911 caller said.
Neighbor Elly Alvarez says one man tried to confront the man with the ax, but the man didn’t stop his attack.
“The neighbor across the street actually told the gentleman to stop, and the gentleman just cussed at him and moved on,” Alvarez said.
Police say the driver hit more than 15 cars, including Alvarez’s which was so badly damaged he couldn’t drive it.
“The windshield and the back and the front were completely smashed in, and of course, some parts of the hood and the panels were damaged as well,” Alvarez said.
Alvarez’s vehicle had to be towed away.
Police found the ax-wielding driver, but he led officers on a vehicle pursuit, hitting another car before officers managed to stop him.
Neighbor Sami Abu-Assaf says the man hit his car several times.
“There was a car parked next to mine with the trunk open, and I figured it was just somebody dropping off their mom, getting some groceries. I guess it was more, he was hitting my car with an ax,” Abu-Assaf said.
Abu-Assaf also temporarily lost his two dogs during the melee. The animals ran out of the house when they head the ax hit the windshield, but police later recovered them.
No injuries were reported after the attack. A motive was not released by police.
