Man dies in freak Dairy Queen drive-thru accident

Posted

IOWA (KWWL/CNN) - A small Iowa community is remembering one of its own after a freak accident at a Dairy Queen drive-thru.

According to officials, 74-year-old Curtis Schantz, was in the drive-thru when his truck stalled, prompting him to get out.

While Schantz was underneath the hood attempting to fix his truck, it rolled over him..

Schantz was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.

In a small town like Alburnett where everyone knows each other, the whole community feels Schantz's loss.

"He's kind, he's dedicated to church, his family, the community. And he's giving, just anything that anybody needs he was there with a helping hand," said Ron Hoover, a former Alburnett fire chief.

Hoover says Schantz played an important role as a mentor and seasoned veteran.

"We'll miss Curtis showing up for breakfast, and meeting people for coffee and telling stories, He was a good story teller," said Hoover.
